Soil Nail Walls
Storyboard for Module 1
Project Overview
Context, Conditions, Scope, and Role
Soil Nail Walls Module 1 was created during Spring 2025 for EME 5942: Field Lab Internship as part of my instructional design internship with eContent Consulting. I designed all five modules for a training course for the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO). Module 1 is an introduction to soil nail wall construction and inspection for state DOT employees, consultants, and construction technicians. I designed the storyboard from a Detailed Design Plan (DDP) and worked independently with regular reviews from a senior instructional designer. I created a 30-slide storyboard with all instructional content, narration scripts, interactive elements, refined learning objectives, assessments, and production notes for the developers. The storyboard features a host character named Jake, click-to-reveal interactions, dropdown selections, animated sequencing, pop-ups, and knowledge check questions. This is the version submitted to the senior instructional designer for review. The project was created using PowerPoint with the Articulate 360 add-in and TechSmith Snagit.

Note: I used Module 1 to align the ISLT competencies but also included links to all five modules for optional review.

Competencies Demonstrated

Communication
  • Communicate effectively in written, oral, and visual formats.
  • Produce clear, concise and grammatically correct messages.
  • Use appropriate tools to communicate with learners, clients, and other stakeholders.
Regular collaboration with the senior instructional designer involved active listening and careful integration of feedback into each draft. I created the course host, Jake, to make the technical content more relatable and approachable for the target audience. The storyboard combined clear narration, visual direction, and production notes that guided developers through the build process and maintained a consistent instructional tone.
Analysis
  • Analyze learning and performance problems to recommend appropriate solutions.
  • Analyze content from a variety of human and non-human sources.
I analyzed the Detailed Design Plan to clarify project goals and identify the performance needs of the audience. I gathered and verified technical information from credible industry sources and compared soil nail wall construction methods with other retaining systems to maintain content accuracy and relevance.
Design
  • Design a curriculum, program, or learning solution.
  • Align outcomes, strategies, and assessments.
  • Generate appropriate instructional strategies and activities.
  • Apply interaction design principles.
  • Design assessments to measure learning and performance.
  • Identify the scope and sequence for instructional solutions.
  • Provide a rationale for design decisions.
I aligned learning outcomes with content and knowledge checks so that assessments measured performance and supported the objectives. Interactive elements like click-to-reveal panels, dropdowns, and animations promoted active learning and illustrated construction processes. Production notes outlined design intent and requested SME materials such as project photos and field examples to enhance accuracy and relevance.
Technology and Media
  • Select and use appropriate technology and media for specific outcomes.
  • Use technology tools in the design process.
  • Provide a rationale for technology and media decisions.
I used PowerPoint because it is eContent Consulting’s standard tool for storyboarding. I selected the Articulate 360 add-in to access Storyline graphics, including the host character Jake, and other visual assets. I also used Snagit to capture technical diagrams from industry manuals to support the instructional content.
Management
  • Establish project scope and goals.
  • Collaborate with team members, clients, and stakeholders.
Regular communication with the senior instructional designer during review cycles helped keep the project moving forward and maintain eContent Consulting’s quality standards. I also participated in weekly team meetings to stay informed on broader project updates.
Personal & Interpersonal
  • Collaborate effectively with others.
  • Give and receive constructive feedback.
  • Build positive relationships with team members, clients, and other stakeholders.
Developing the storyboard involved continuous collaboration with the senior instructional designer. I incorporated feedback from each review cycle to prepare the design for SME review and client submission.
